“I have come not to abolish, but to fulfill.” These are Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:17 regarding the Jewish law. Indeed, throughout the gospels Jesus is accused of breaking the Jewish laws regarding cleanliness, fasting, working on the Sabbath, and even blasphemy. The religious and political power holders saw his teachings, like the beatitudes that immediately precede this passage in Matthew’s account of the Sermon on the Mount, as a threat to the status quo.
