When I was a child, I often fantasized of becoming a park ranger or policeman when I grew up. But when I dreamt those dreams, I simultaneously had a feeling that neither of those careers would be part of my future. As I think on them now, I suppose I never felt I had what it took to become a law enforcement officer: enough regard for rules, ability to enforce them, quick judgment in any situation, critical thinking skills, etc. But there is a job that I think I would be good at.

At some point, every one hears the phrase “caught up in the midst of everything”. Amazingly enough, it is around this time of year that we usually hear that saying in a bit more often. Though I have been seeing Christmas items for sale since October 28 (yes, three days before Halloween and almost two months before Christmas Day!), it does not always seem like the season of peace and joy that it should be. And even though I usually consider seeing artificial trees and ornaments for sale prior to Thanksgiving as a bad thing, it always strikes me as a reminder that my favorite season of all is just around the corner. ’Tis the time of year for changes in weather, new sport seasons, and semester finals. As people begin carving and stuffing turkeys, slicing ham, and baking cookies shaped like trees and rain deer, I get excited for the next opportunity to officiate basketball, enjoy some downhill skiing, and avoid snow storms by hunkering down with some hot cocoa and watching movies with friends.
