Most of us give a little and do not realize that we gave, whether it be time, talent, or treasure. But, how much could we really give? Sometimes it hurts to give a little more. We want to make it known to the whole crowd when we go above and beyond in our own personal giving.
How often have we come out of a store and there are people asking for assistance? We are often afraid to give to them, because we are afraid of what they will really use the money for. We may not have a lot extra ourselves and giving might mean going without for ourselves. The widow gave to Elijah her last little bit of oil and flour even though she did not have enough to feed her son and herself. She probably didn't know Elijah too well or what he might do with the cake, but she gave and trusted in God's word through Elijah. How was she repaid? The Lord provided and she had enough to eat for a whole year. Putting that much trust in the Lord is hard when it means we may end up going without, but God has provided, still provides, and always will provide.
Giving is a hard thing for many people and it's even harder to give without making it known to many people. With all of the social media resources that are available today, it is just too easy to share what you did with the world. The current trend is to give and then immediately share what we gave with everyone. But, what would happen if we didn't tell anyone that we gave? Would it still make a difference in someone's life? Will we not feel fulfilled due to not receiving immediate praise and satisfaction? I can assure you that God knows and your reward will be great in heaven.
My challenge for you this week is to push yourself a little out of your comfort zone and give maybe a little extra than you think you can give. This could be anything from a little more in the collection at church or a few extra minutes to help out someone in need even though you have such a busy schedule. Put your trust in God and there will always be enough for all of God's people.
