Healing Touch

Scripture Reflection for the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time (February 15, 2015)
Scripture Readings:
Leviticus 13:1-2, 44-46
Psalm 32:1-2, 5, 11
1 Corinthians 10:31—11:1
Mark 1:40-45
Today’s First Reading gives us context for the Gospel, revealing the transformative nature of Jesus’ reaction and action towards the leper.
Those with leprosy were considered unclean, because of the open sores on their bodies. They had to live outside of the community; and should they be around other people, they must announce their uncleanliness, so that no one would come near them and risk becoming unclean themselves. Ostracized, possibly feared, uncared for, and untouched.
Yet, when the leper approaches him, Jesus is moved with compassion. Jesus reaches out, and touches the man, healing him. He not only heals him physically, but emotionally, as well; for this man, healed and soon to be purified, will now be able to be a full, contributing member of the community, and be in the presence of others.
As Paul describes in the Second Reading, Jesus did not seek his own benefit or well-being, but the benefit of the many, of the community, of this man, that he might be saved, and his dignity be restored.
Let us not be afraid to reach out and touch those who are in need of compassion, care, and healing. Let us bridge the gaps and cross the boundaries. Let us listen. Let us embrace. Let us recognize the dignity and worth of everyone.
