Scripture Reflection for the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph (Sunday, December 30, 2012)

Before turning to the readings, it might be helpful to know a bit about the history of this feast. Interestingly enough, Pope Leo XIII initiated the Feast of the Holy Family in 1893, and Pope Benedict XV extended the feast to the universal church in 1921. Leo's well known encyclical, Rerum Novarum on the Rights of Workers, addressed the justice issues of factory workers in the midst of the industrial revolution.

Cry out with joy to the Lord all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness, come before God singing for joy! (Psalm 100: 1-2)

Easter is not over and done with, for our joy in the resurrection and all that it means to us continues to fill us with JOY. The readings we are given to hear remind us that ALLELUIA remains our song, as we contemplate the resurrection of the Christ in new and deeper ways.

Scripture Reflection for the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time (September 22, 2013)

Scripture Readings: Amos 8:4-7 Psalm 113 1Timothy 2:1-8 Luke 16:1-13

Scripture Reflection for The Third Sunday of Advent (December 15, 2013)

Scripture Readings: Isaiah 35:1-6a, 10 Psalm 146 James 5:7-10 Matthew 11:2-11

In Chapter 50 of Isaiah, the prophet says he has been given a well-trained tongue, to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them. In this season of Advent, the readings we are given to hear today do indeed have words that rouse feelings and responses in us as we approach the great feast of the Incarnation at Christmas.
