The solemnity of the most holy trinity (MAY 22, 2016)

“I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth.” (JN 16:12)
In our Gospel reading today we reflect on the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. The mystery of the trinity, is a mystery, that we as human beings will never fully understand, because the human mind is too limited. God’s divine nature, the mystery of God being One and yet three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, are three ways for us to better understand God. When we enter into prayer, we begin with and close our prayers by making the sign of the cross; we calling forth the Holy Trinity as a way to offer all that we are and and all that we have to the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
We hear that the disciples, who have already had three years to learn from Jesus, still have much more to learn. Jesus’ language, not only declaring that there is not enough time to say everything he would like to but also, that his followers do not have the ability to even hear all that Jesus would like to share, is a promise of a future. There is comfort, almost freedom, in knowing that I have not learned everything I am supposed learn. To be satisfied with not wanting to learn more would be an injustice to God, to ourselves, and our communities that we are called to share our gifts and talents with. We must call upon the guidance of the the Spirit to journey with us as we seek the truth and fullness of God.
The disciples formation is not yet complete, just how all of us living today, have not yet completed our formation either. No matter what stage we are on our journey, we still have more to learn. God invites us and calls us to join in life and love with Him, revealed through those around us; as Saint Benedict so eloquently says we are called to open “the ears of our heart” when discerning God’s call, God’s truth and God’s love.
