Movie Preview: Son of God

by Molly Hickey | January 31, 2014

Last March my husband Ryan and I faithfully tuned in to the History Channel each Sunday night for watch The Bible. Produced by actor Roma Downey (from Touched by an Angel) and her husband Mark Burnett (Survivor) this mini-series told the stories of the Bible from Genesis to the Resurrection. This series was a huge success earning several Emmy nominations and attracting over 15 million viewers making it the History Channel’s most watched program. We thoroughly enjoyed this series, as it gave new life to the stories we’d heard since childhood.

Son of God will be in theaters soon starting on February 28, 2014. This feature film will tell the story of the life and Resurrection of Christ using both aired and unused footage from The Bible Series. Based on John’s Gospel account, the ministry and miracles of Christ are depicted in a lively and emotionally engaging way that will draw in people of all faiths. Portuguese actor, Diogo Morgado portrays Jesus as a strong, compassionate leader as Roma Downey gives a very heartfelt, emotionally charged performance as his mother Mary.  Producers Downey and Burnett took great care in making this film as biblically accurate as possible.

[This movie is the first of several slated to hit the theaters that will focus on the stories of the Bible. Noah, starring Russell Crowe and Emma Watson will share the Old Testament adventure story. Christian Bale will play Moses in the Hollywood version of Exodus. Both movies are scheduled to be release in 2014.  The Biblically accuracy of these “Big-Hollywood” films will be interesting to evaluate.]

In a culture and time when secular media influences our lives in many ways, I am excited to see the success of faith-based films. As Christians, we know that the Bible is filled with some of the best stories of bravery, heroism, love, adventure and suspense. Regardless of the authenticity of these Biblical movies, they can get people thinking about God and their own views of Him.

When Son of God makes its way to a theater near you, go. Support this film and help to send a message to Hollywood that we want and need more feature films sharing faith and values and centering on truth. Choose a friend to take to the movies and use this as a springboard for conservation about faith.

As we prepare for the upcoming season of Lent, we reflect on the life and passion of Christ. Son of God provides another reminder of the awesome significance of this story. Biblical movies can be exciting ways to share faith with a main stream audience, BUT as with most movies, they don’t compare to the book!
